Tracheal Chondrosarcoma Excised With Extracorporeal Circulation

چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: Tracheal chondrosarcoma (TCS) is a rare malignancy, with only 19 cases described in the literature to date. Case presentation: Herein, we presented the third-largest TCS with such an airway compromise that neither orotracheal intubation nor jet ventilation or even tracheostomy was possible. So, extracorporeal circulation was needed to excise the tumor in a one-stage procedure. The patient presented no tumor recurrences after surgery during an approximate7-years follow-up. So open surgical resection and end-to-end anastomosis probes may be applied as a safe and successful treatment. A review of the previous literature revealed no extracorporeal circulation in previous practices. Conclusion: Management of tracheal chondrosarcoma is challenging due to its airway compromise during the procedure. Different treatment modalities have been advised but none of them included extracorporeal circulation as an option. We believe that this approach allows for better control of the resection and ensures better oxygenation of the patient.

Prolonged extracorporeal circulation.
Interest in prolonged perfusions has increased pari passu with the possibility of treating the more complicated cardiac deformities. Prolonged perfusions may be of interest also in functional disturbances arising during operations using the heart-lung machine, since it may be difficult to discontinue the perfusion before cardiac function is again satisfactory. Furthermore, the biological change...
متن کاملEffects of Cardiac Surgery with Extracorporeal Circulation
The effect of extracorporeal circulation during open heart surgery on changes in intellectual function was studied in 18 children. A group of patients undergoing such surgery was compared to a control group undergoing cardiac surgery without extracorporeal circulation. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children was used to evaluate the patients. No significant differences were found in either...

______________ _ Extracorporeal circulation has recently expanded outside the realm of the traditional cardiac procedures. Extracorporeal circulation and cardiopulmonary bypass has expanded to include: left and right heart long and short term support, systemic and regional hyperthermic perfusion for cancer therapy, systemic rewarming for hypothermia victims due to exposure, repair of aortic tea...
متن کاملHemodynamic Effects of Extracorporeal Circulation
The hemodynamic effects of closed-chest extracorporeal circulation were investigated in normal dogs and in dogs subjected to coronary embolization. In both groups, despite delivery of large volumes of blood into the abdominal aorta through peripheral routes, a rise in proximal aortic pressure could not be achieved; to accomplish this it was necessary to increase vascular resistance by balloon o...

The experience gained in the investigation of 100 cases of cardiac surgery treated by use of extracorporeal circulation has shown that certain simple laboratory tests suffice to detect induced defects in the blood and to guide therapy. These tests have been devised to detect the level of circulating heparin during perfusion; the presence of residual heparin following perfusion; the existence of...
